destination workshop: sicily, italy

exploring sicily

february 22-March 2, 2017

Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, has seen all the currents of history ebb and flow through her. The Greeks, the Arabs, the Normans – all left their mark on the culture and the country.  Sicily overflows with ancient temples, tiny villages, historic cities and many centuries of architecture, a rich tapestry of images.  Add the coastal villages and the silhouette of Mt Etna, the only active volcano in Europe,  vineyards, mountains and deep blue sea,  and you have a photographic destination with endless possibilities.

Among the places we will visit are the following:

Palermo – exotic, chaotic, exuberant Palermo, the ‘most European of African cities,’ rich in contrasts, history, street life and colorful characters and neighborhoods.

Agrigento – famous for the Valley of the Temples, a fantastic archaeological site with well-preserved remains of Greek settlement.  Agrigento boasts seven temples. In various states of ruin, dating back to the 5th century BC.

Siracusa – ancient center of Greek, Byzantine and Judaic civilizations, Siracusa was once the most important city in Magna Graecia. The pedestrian-only island of Ortygia is a charming area with tiny ancient streets, a cathedral,  a Byzantine basilica, and a Norman church.

Taormina – Stunning views and a picture perfect location perched high above the sea, along with an ancient Greek theatre.

Cefalù – a small fishing village lodged between the sea and an enormous cliff, Cefalù is home to one of the most important cathedrals in Europe.

Mt. Etna – Europe’s only active volcano, with its surroundings of villages, orchards, vineyards, and outstanding views.

The workshop is open to all levels. Non photographers are also welcome.
