Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of photography classes do you offer?

We offer a range of photography classes in NYC, taught hands-on in real neighborhoods - from a Digital Photography for Beginners class that teaches you how to actually use your camera or phone, to our signature Art of Intuitive Photography class, a more creative and mindful way of seeing.

You can take single classes à la carte and curate your own mini-course, and there are also online courses, and photo tours and retreats.

I've never taken a photography class. Is this for me?

Absolutely. We offer beginner-friendly photography classes, and no experience or fancy equipment is needed - a smartphone is welcome. So many students arrive sure they're "not artistic" and leave feeling creative and confident.

The best place to start is our Digital Photography for Beginners class here in New York City. If that doesn’t excite you, you’ll learn a lot in our Photo Explorations class.

What makes Art of Intuitive Photography different?

We believe strong photography combines both technical understanding and personal creativity.

Our classes teach students how to confidently use their camera while also developing observation, composition, creativity, and trust in their own perspective.

Students often tell us our classes feel supportive, inspiring, approachable, and unlike traditional photography education.

Where are classes held, and what if I'm not in NYC?

In-person classes are taught hands-on across New York City neighborhoods and iconic locations including Central Park, Chinatown, DUMBO, Grand Central, and more.

If you're further away, you can take our self-paced online courses from anywhere - ABCs of Manual Mode and Become a Better Photographer: Trust Your Intuition - or join one of our photo tours around the world. You can always read our book Art of Intuitive Photography to get you started.

Do I need an expensive camera or can I use my Smartphone?

Many of our students use their smartphone in our Art of Intuitive Photography class, Photo Explorations, and photo tours.

For our Digital Photography for Beginners class, students need a camera with manual mode so they can learn the fundamentals of photography and how to confidently use their camera. If you don’t own one yet, camera rentals are available for $30 per session.

Are classes indoors or outdoors?

Our Digital Photography for Beginners class takes place indoors inside an atrium in Midtown Manhattan on East 56th St. Most of our Photography Experiences classes are held outdoors throughout NYC, unless a specific class takes place inside a museum or indoor location.

Classes are designed to be hands-on, creative, and rooted in real-world experience.

Do you teach children and families too?

Yes - our classes are suitable for both adults and children. Mindy has taught students as young as 4 and as old as 85, along with teens, families, and mother-daughter pairs.

Family sessions use playful, age-appropriate exercises like scavenger hunts built around shapes, colors, and light, so everyone can explore together.

We also offer after school sessions and summer camp for both kids and teens.

What if I feel intimidated or don’t consider myself creative?

You are not alone. Many of our students begin feeling nervous, overwhelmed by camera settings, or unsure if they are “creative enough” for photography.

Our classes are designed to be supportive, approachable, and encouraging for all levels, with a focus on helping students build confidence while developing their own way of seeing and photographing the world around them.
