Photography Skillcations - What They Are and Why Travelers Want One
For years, we’ve called them photography tours and retreats.
Recently, another word has started to feel like a good description of what we’ve been doing all along: photography skillcations..
A skillcation is a vacation where you learn or deepen a skill while you travel. It could be cooking, painting, writing, gardening, surfing, or photography. The idea is simple: you’re not just going away. You’re coming home with something you can continue using.
A photography skillcation is part travel experience, part photography class, and part creative reset.
For many people, travel and photography naturally go together. We want to remember where we’ve been. We want to bring something home. But sometimes we come back with hundreds of images that don’t quite feel like the experience we had.
That’s where a photography skillcation can be different.
You’re learning as you travel, in real places, with real light, real moments, and the support of a small group. You’re not only taking pictures of where you are. You’re learning to notice more while you’re there.
And you don’t need to be an advanced photographer.
Our trips are beginner-friendly and smartphone-friendly. You can join us with a DSLR, mirrorless camera, point-and-shoot camera, or phone. What matters most is curiosity and a willingness to explore.
They’re for curious travelers who want to come home with more than photographs. They’re also for people who may not think of themselves as photographers yet, but still feel drawn to making more personal images.
So yes, we still call them photography tours and retreats. But we also love the phrase photography skillcation because it names the deeper part of the experience.
You travel somewhere beautiful. You learn. You connect.
And hopefully, you come home seeing a little differently.
